Does er smell like cheese when it's turning?

I need to know right away, I'm making a cake, but I have newer er. This er isnot old, but not new either. It had a faint smell of cheese when I opened the pkg. Unless it was just from the fridge . We use a fridge outside in the garage, and it was in there and it needed defrosting, so now I'm not sure if the ers bad. I tasted it, and it was fine, but I just need to know if it smells like cheese when it's bad.
