Is it possible for a laser to encode text?

Like you know when you scan a bar code and once in the system it either has some information appear or a task will command whatever to do something. Is there a program currently that works like that as well, but with just regular text? Even if it was on type of font and size, is it still possible? If there is please try to attach a link to the machine.
